Great Dane EXTREMELY RARE Antique Vtg Hubley Cast Iron
LATE 1800s - EARLY 1900s HUBLEY CAST IRON GREAT DANE BOOKEND
NOTE: This Hubley bookend is EXTREMELY RARE. Some historians who document the items produced by the company have said that this is the rarest of the bookends and doorstops that were produced. The complete sets of both bookends  that I have seen have been priced at 0. Single bookends often command prices of 0.
The Hubley Manufacturinng Company was  founded in 1894 in Lancaster, PA. Their specialty was producing items in cast iron. Early products included doorstops, bookends and toys. Later, the company specialized in toys. Some of those gorgeous handpainted toys  have sold for over  0,000.
The first examples of the Great Dane bookend, which probably date from the mid to late 1890s, were done with a  bronze patina. Later models are handpainted with the dog being gold and the  base in green.
Most of the bronze patination has worn off this old cast iron piece, but you can still see the old detail which I love, especially the color. Somewhere along the way, someone applied a green felt pad to the bottom of the base. This, too, has worn off leaving only vague remnants.
