Your interest in a BMW, Volvo, Audi or Mercedes is completely understandable. That
’
s because you don’t know about the SAAB.
Based on sheer facts alone, your enthusiasm for all those cars would seem to be somewhat unwarranted.
Size.
The exterior dimensions of the Saab 900 are similar to those of the Audi 4000 and 5000, the Volvo 244 and 264 and the BMW 320i and 528i. Inside, however, the Saab 900 is bigger than all of them. It’s large enough inside, in fact, to be classified a mid-sized car by the EPA. (The Mercedes 280E, 280CE and 280SE,
by the way, are
larger outside, but smaller inside. Like the Audis, Volvos and BMWs, the EPA has officially designated them compact cars.)
Performance.
Against the clock in a 1979 Road &
Track magazine test, the four-cylinder Saab 900 Turbo recorded 61.4 mph through a 700-ft. slalom course.
Faster than the Volvo, the two Audis, the three Mercedes and the four BMWs tested by the Road & Track editors in ’78 and ’79.
Faster, also, than two Ferraris, two Jaguars and a couple of Porsches, including the 928.
Braking.
From 60 to 0 in the nearly two years of Road & Track tests, the front-wheel drive Saab 900 Turbo stopped faster than the Audi 4000, the Audi 5000, the BMW 320i, the BMW 333i Alpina, the BMW 528i, the BMW 633CSi, the BMW 733i, the Datsun 280 ZX, the Ferrari 308 GTS, the Jaguar XJ6L, the Jaguar XJ12L, the Maserati Merak/SS, the Mazda RX7, the Mercedes-Benz 450SEL and the Volvo 242 GT. Which is really stopping.
Utility.
Saab has made provisions which make a station wagon unnecessary.
Fold the rear seat of the Saab 900 forward, lift the rear hatchback and the Saab presents a station wagon-like space over six feet long and
53 cubic feet big.
Yet even with the rear seat in place, the Saab trunk is huge.
As large, by 1980
EPA measurements, as the trunks in the largest sedans.
Economy.
The Saab 900 EMS gets [21] EPA estimated mpg and [30] estimated highway mpg.
Better than the Audi 5000, the Volvo 242 GT. the Volvo 244, the Volvo 264, the Peugeot 604 and the Mercedes 280E, 280CE and 280SE.
And the others are compacts.
The Saab is a mid-sized car.
(Remember, use estimated mpg for comparison only. Mileage varies with speed, trip length and weather. Actual highway mileage will probably be less.)
Luxury.
More like cars that offer little else.
Price.
More like the Volvo, BMW or Audi.

A Saab is designed and built to be everything.
This accomplishment is so
rare in a car, Saabs are worth your attention on curiosity alone.
“If we had to pick one target at which to aim the sedan of tomorrow,” the editors of Car and Driver recently wrote after assessing the Saab 900, “this would be it.”
To those perhaps more familiar with the Audi, Volvo, BMW or Mercedes, this may be a surprising choice.
Based on the facts, however, it’s the only choice Car and Driver could logically make.
Room.
Despite having exterior dimensions virtually identical to the Audi 4000 and 5000, the Volvo DL and GLE,
the BMW 320i and 528i and the Mercedes 280E, the Saab 900 is bigger inside than all of them.
